About Fold
Fold is a publicly listed bitcoin financial services company building the tools people need to earn, buy, sell, and live on Bitcoin. Our products include the first-ever bitcoin-rewards Visa debit card, a bitcoin-rewards credit card, a Bitcoin exchange and wallet, and thousands of merchant offers. The Backend Engineering team owns the core infrastructure that powers all of this — payment processing, ledger systems, card transaction flows, and the pipelines that tie it all together. We're a small team solving hard problems in financial infrastructure, and every engineer has a direct impact on the product.
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build the financial infrastructure behind Fold. You'll design, build, and scale backend services that power payments and real-time transaction processing. This is a chance to have an outsized impact at a company where your technical decisions shape the trajectory of the product.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, reliable backend services that handle real-time transaction processing
- Build and evolve event-driven systems for processing financial events
- Integrate with external partners — card processors, banking APIs, payment networks
- Own features end-to-end, from technical design through deployment and monitoring
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and fellow engineers to ship quickly and iteratively
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and architectural guidance
- Improve engineering practices, tooling, and infrastructure as the team grows
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Java or a similar statically-typed language (Kotlin, Scala, C#)
- Experience building and operating production microservices and distributed systems
- Experience with messaging or event streaming systems (Kafka, Pulsar, or similar)
- Solid understanding of relational databases with an intuition for data modeling and transactional consistency
- Comfort working with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization
- Experience scaling systems in a fast-paced, growth-stage environment
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego mindset
- Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available)
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience with financial systems, payment processing, or ledger/accounting domains
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures, CQRS, and event sourcing patterns
- Experience with Micronaut, Quarkus, or similar modern Java frameworks
